Do AI assistants recommend local businesses?
Yes. Ask ChatGPT for a dentist, a software house or a dog kennel in a specific city and it will name real local businesses, describe them, and often recommend one over another. Most local business owners have never seen these answers and do not know they are being ranked inside them. That blindness is the opportunity: local AI answers are decided by legibility signals most local competitors have never touched, so the first business in a market to do the work often takes the answer.
- AI names local businesses by name, today, in your city.
- It reads your profile, site, reviews and consistency to decide.
- Most local markets have zero optimized competitors. Open field.
- I have ranked local businesses into AI answers. It works.
What AI actually says about local markets
Run the test for your own city: "best [category] in [city]" in ChatGPT with web search, in Perplexity, in Google with AI Overviews. You will get names. Real businesses, with descriptions, sometimes with reasoning about who fits which need. The AI assembles these answers from what it can read: business profiles, websites, review platforms, directories, local press, forum threads. Every local business is already being evaluated by this machinery. Almost none of them know it.
In enterprise SaaS, GEO is already a knife fight. In most local markets, not one competitor has optimized for AI. The first mover often simply takes the answer.
How AI picks which local business to name
The same three questions as everywhere, with a local accent. Can it find you: your business profile exists, your site is crawlable, AI bots are not blocked. Can it understand you: your category, services and area are stated plainly, your entity is consistent, ideally one name, one address, one description everywhere, with LocalBusiness schema tying it together. Can it trust you: reviews with real content, third parties describing you the same way you describe yourself, longevity signals. A local business that answers all three clearly beats a bigger rival that never made itself legible.
What I have seen work, with real businesses
This is not theory for me. A software house under one year old, ranked #1 for its core local term above older competitors with more reviews, organically. A working-line kennel that now receives referral traffic directly from ChatGPT and ships worldwide from a small Brazilian city. A language school ranked above competitors that were always more established online. The pattern repeats: the local businesses that became legible won, not the biggest ones.
The local playbook, basic to advanced
- Basic: complete business profile on Google, consistent name, address and description across every platform, a website that states category, services and area in plain language.
- Intermediate: LocalBusiness schema with sameAs links, an llms.txt stating what you are and who you serve, an FAQ answering the questions local buyers actually ask, with schema.
- Advanced: reviews that mention specific services (those phrases feed the AI's description of you), local third-party mentions, and a monthly prompt audit tracking whether you or a rival owns the city's answer.
Common questions
Does ChatGPT use Google reviews for local recommendations?
ChatGPT's web search reads the open web, leaning on Bing's index, which includes review content from multiple platforms. Perplexity cites review sites directly. The safe assumption: your reviews, their volume, recency and the specific words in them, feed how AI describes and ranks you locally.
Can a new local business get recommended by AI?
Yes, and sometimes faster than an established one, because legibility beats longevity when the incumbent never optimized. A new business with a clear entity, clean schema and consistent presence can be the easiest business in town for the AI to read. I ranked a software house under one year old above older rivals this way.
Is local GEO different from local SEO?
They overlap heavily and feed each other. Local SEO earns the map pack and rankings; local GEO earns the AI's named recommendation. The signals are largely shared, which means doing the work once, properly, wins both surfaces. See what is GEO.
